FIDE Youth World Chess Championships 2024

The days when we were happy if a Belgian scored two points at the Youth World Championships are long gone. With Daniel Dardha, we had our first player who competed among the better ones, and since then, the other Belgian players are doing quite well too. The question was whether any Belgians would stand out at the Youth World Cup …

European Chess Club Cups 2024 in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia

Interclub communication

Following an official complaint from a club, the board met on wednesday evening to analyze the situation. The RBCF acknowledges that there was a problem and that team compositions may have been visible before the round on a site external to the RBCF, due to a date error in our system. This was rectified on sunday, and the other dates …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 11

The last report from Budapest, chess city par excellence, where all eyes were also on in the 1990s because one Bobby Fischer, who most probably descended from a Hungarian father (the physicist Dr Pal Nemeyi), lived there from 1993 to 2000. By the way, his rematch against Boris Spasski in 1992 was mainly due to a Hungarian player, Zita Rajcsanyi. …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 10
Lajos Portisch, who we presented in our yesterday's report, got to play the first move at the Olympiads today and he received recognition for all his achievements. Yet he is certainly not the only living legend of Hungarian chess. In women's chess too, Hungary grew into a top country and a great candidate for medals in the Olympiads. Until the …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 9

A country where chess was so popular would naturally put itself on the chess map. Laszlo Szabo took over from Gena Maroczy as best player. Gedeon Barcza (1911-1986) would mainly dedicate himself to patriotic chess as a writer and trainer. Together, from 1951, they would inspire an awful lot of Hungarians through the chess magazine Magyar Sakkélet. Popularity would also …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 8
Due to the many commissions I try to attend in Budapest, yesterday's report has been delayed for a while.... My apologies. Hungary did not just go through a period of poverty after WWI. In fact, it also had to cope with an identity shift. The Austrian empire had disintegrated and German culture became less pronounced. As a result, Jewish culture …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 7

Chess to get out of misery... it could easily have been a theme at the Global Chess Festival organised for the 10th time by Judit Polgar yesterday and the day before yesterday, but it was reality after the First World War. On 6 November 1921, the Hungarian Chess Federation MSSZ was founded at the Budapest Chamber of Industry and Commerce …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 6

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 6
Just as our Olympics teams did not travel to Budapest to visit the city, the young Maroczy (yes, the one from the Maroczy bind) had not come to Budapest to see the new buildings. He was mostly intrigued by the already long tradition of Hungarian chess. When the first leg of Maroczy's career had ended, Budapest had become a city …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 5

Today I searched in vain for the Café Wurm in Budapest, the cradle of organised Hungarian chess, where in the first quarter of the 19th century chess players regularly met and conceived the idea of forming a league. Yet it was not that Café, but rather the Café Velence, equally untraceable today, that became the main venue for chess players …

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 4

Belgium in Budapest - Chess Olympiads - Round 4
‘Budapest is the most beautiful city in the world,’ I read in an article by Laszlo Jakobetz. Judit Polgar also confided this to me when she came to the 2022 Belgian Youth Championships, but she then also added: ‘... but Bruges is also a beautiful city’. I doubt that Budapest is the most beautiful city in the world, and the …

Both Women en men's team are taking part at the Olympiad. This tournament has begun the 11th of september. In the first match, women made a good winning over Oman (4-0).
