Daniel Dardha of KSK Rochade became European vice-champion.
From November 7 to 20, 2024, the European Individual Chess Championship took place in the picturesque town of Petrovac, Montenegro. This prestigious tournament brought together the best chess players in Europe (213 participants) to compete for the coveted title of European Champion.
The European Championship was played according to the Swiss 11-round system. The 2024 European Individual Chess Championship is a qualifying event for the 2025 FIDE World Cup. The new European champion was chosen after an exciting final.
The final round of the 2024 European Individual Chess Championship featured an exciting duel between Grandmaster Aleksandar Indjic of Serbia and Grandmaster Daniel Dardha of KSK Rochade Eupen. Both players had been unbeaten throughout the tournament and went into the decisive match unbeaten.
Daniel Dardha showed his fighting spirit right from the start of this decisive match, taking the initiative. With precise shots and courageous attacks, he put his Serbian opponent under pressure. Aleksandar Indjic, however, proved his class by skilfully defending himself against the threats.
Indjic went into the game with a half-point lead, knowing that a draw would be enough to secure the title of European champion. While Dardha went for broke, Indjic remained cool and took every opportunity to stabilize his position. Despite Dardha’s tireless attempts to turn the game in his favor, Indjic didn’t concede a decisive advantage. After an intense battle, the party finally ended in a draw.
With this result, Aleksandar Indjic was crowned the new European champion. Daniel Dardha, however, put in an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, convincing everyone that he is one of the strongest players in Europe. GM Aleksandar Indjic (SRB, 2623) was the sole winner. GM Daniel Dardha (BEL, 2606) took second place with 8.5/11 points and GM Frederik Svane (GER, 2654) was third.
