FIDE ELO migration finished. Goodbye national ELO.

Steven Bellens     06.07.2026    1

Following up on the last National ELO ranking, published June 22nd, FIDE has finished our migration project by converting and including all impacted players on the FIDE ranking list.

We thank the people that worked on this migration, specifically Sabrina de San Vicente (FIDE), Shaun Press (FIDE), Vladimir Kukaev (FIDE), Luc Cornet (RBCF) and Jorian Burssens (RBCF).

How does this FIDE ELO migration impact my ranking?

  • Players with existing FIDE ELO kept their FIDE ELO as is
  • Affiliated players without FIDE ELO but with national ELO had their national ELO converted to FIDE ELO using a standardized formula based on statistical analysis by FIDE: FIDE ELO = National ELO – 2.
  • Players without a national ELO but with a game history (<5 games played) only have their FIDE games converted to the FIDE ELO game history
  • Non-affiliated players with LastGames since 2015 (10 year history), without FIDE ELO but with old national ELO, had their national ELO converted to FIDE ELO, provided they already have a FIDE ID.

If you believe you comply with the above conditions, but you didn’t have your national ELO converted to FIDE ELO, please contact us through fide@frbe-kbsb-ksb.be.

Why did we move to a FIDE ELO only system?

Abandoning our national ELO system makes sense because:

  • the international chess community needs a uniform and internationally recognized rating system,
  • previous arguments in favor of national ranking systems have largely faded in view of the expansion of the FIDE ranking system
  • the maintenance of a national ELO system next to an international system duplicates both registration and processing efforts

What does this mean for the National ELO system?

The national ELO system is now in a read-only state. There will be no new national rankings published. Tournament submissions for national ELO are no longer treated. ELO processing is available for FIDE ELO only.

You can still consult the current and historical player ratings through the current national ELO ranking system. This system will soon be migrated to a new membership system, in which national ELO is no longer supported. We will provide an archived version in which you can consult the historical national ELO data. More details on this system will be provided once available.

Over the next couple of days and weeks, we will update this blog, removing information about the national ELO system, and making sure all ELO related information is correctly referring to the last state.

Sorry hoor, een pure schande dat nationale elo-klassement afschaffen … Maar ja, als we graag de Fide rijker maken, doe maar voort K.B.S.B., ik schaam mij diep tegenover onze modale Belgische schakers …
